NP city sales tax clinches 7th straight annual record

Net proceeds from North Platte's basic 1.5% city sales tax clinched a seventh consecutive annual record in November.
Last week's Nebraska Department of Revenue local tax reports for the month showed the city collecting nearly $1.33 million from its overall 2% sales tax, counting the temporary half-cent voters approved in 2022 for recreation projects.
That translates into $997,325 in net collections attributed to the permanent 1.5% rate, shattering 2022's previous November record of $815,169.
With totals from December's holiday shopping still to come next month, North Platte had received $10.25 million in net 2023 sales taxes under the base rate and $12.88 million overall.
The city took in nearly $10.17 million in net sales taxes in 2022, the first time North Platte had topped the $10 million annual mark.
The special half-cent tax, which took effect April 1, brought in $332,442 in November. The city collected $2.63 million in the tax's first eight months toward the voter-approved $52.5 million in costs to expand the North Platte Recreation Complex, renovate and add to Cody Pool and relocate the city's skate park.
November's sales-tax take set an all-time North Platte monthly record for the ninth straight month. With December's total pending, the city had failed to set a new monthly mark only in February.
Proceeds from Lincoln County's 4% lodging tax retreated in November but still moved 2023's overall total within $2,547 of its calendar-year record of $1.204 million in 2022. November's hotel-motel tax total was $74,538, down 4.2% from the month's 2022 take of $77,774 and 8.4% below the all-time November record of $81,388 in 2021.
